George Washington Introduction: One of the most significant individuals in American history, George Washington (1732–1799) was an American political figure and military commander. He was the oldest child of Augustine Washington and Mary Ball Washington and was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was homeschooled and an ardent reader, with a special interest in military history. At the age of 20, Washington joined the Virginia militia as a major and started his military career in 1752.
